Man chops wife to death, then ends his life

Kaieteur News – Shockwaves ripped through the Crabwood Creek, Corentyne, Berbice community on Sunday morning, after a man went berserk brutally chopping his common- law wife of 15 years to death before ending his own life by consuming a poisonous substance.
Dead are Alisha Narine, 36, and Ram Singh, who according to police reports, ingested a poisonous substance after committing the heinous act. The police confirmed that Singh died while under guard at the Number 75 Village Hospital, Corentyne.
The shocking ordeal unfolded at the Vishal Singh Sawmill compound at Crabwood Creek, where the couple lived.
Speaking to Kaieteur News, Meena Narine, 38, sister of the now dead woman, related that “this morning, my cousin from New York called her, and he (Singh) was behind her, and he turned and tell my cousin that he’s gonna kill her.”
The threat was made while Singh brandished a cutlass, as he ordered Narine to cut the call, the sister recounted. Not long after, her cousin contacted her and quickly updated her on the disturbing details, but according to her, while she was still on the phone with him, Alisha’s 18-year-old daughter, Felisha, received a call which detailed that her mother was heard screaming. By the time they arrived at the sawmill, the mother of two was already dead.
Police reports said Singh was found in a trench where he was arrested, cautioned and taken to the hospital.
The dead woman’s sister divulged that for all the years the couple was together, Alisha suffered endless physical abuse at the hands of Singh.
“He always ill-treats her, beat her, threaten her. Last couple months (ago) he threatened she in the market and tried to jook she up right in front of everybody and the security guard in the market catch he and he was four months in prison.”
Even though she underwent endless cycles of assault, the deceased Narine, a domestic worker, always warmed up to Singh’s apologies and assurances of changing, her sister told this newspaper. Multiple pleas for her to end the relationship with the abusive man were dismissed, the sister shared in grief.
Meena also told this newspaper that Singh even attempted to set her mother’s house on fire twice and vowed that if he could not get to harm Alisha, he would extend his plot to her family. Meena reasoned that her sister may have stayed with Singh over fear of him making good on his threats to harm her family.
Police said the couple’s bodies are at the Skeldon Hospital Mortuary awaiting port-mortem examinations.
