Thank You, Mr. President – But One Demerara Bridge Is Not Enough
Dear Mr. President,
I wish to express my sincere thanks and appreciation for your government’s commitment to improving Guyana’s infrastructure, particularly through the construction of the new Demerara Harbour Bridge. This is a critical national development project that will greatly improve traffic flow, reduce travel time, and facilitate economic growth. It is a long-overdue project that the people of Guyana, especially those on the West Demerara, are grateful to see finally underway.
However, as the country continues to grow—especially with the rapid development taking place along the West Bank and West Coast—it is important to look ahead. While the new bridge is a much-needed improvement, the reality is that one crossing over the Demerara River will still not be enough in the near future.
I respectfully propose the consideration of a second bridge crossing further upriver, perhaps closer to Land of Canaan or Timehri. This alternative route would provide a strategic bypass for commuters heading to the Cheddi Jagan International Airport and upriver locations, allowing them to avoid the congested Georgetown corridor altogether.
Such a development would not only alleviate pressure on the new bridge and the East Bank highway but also support the long-term vision of decentralizing economic activity and urban growth. With the significant expansion of residential housing, industrial zones, and commercial activity on the West Bank, a single bridge is unlikely to meet the future demands of a rapidly developing Guyana.
A second bridge further inland would be a wise and forward-thinking investment in national mobility and resilience. It would reflect a proactive approach to development rather than a reactive one.
Once again, thank you for the progress we are seeing. I encourage your government to continue thinking boldly about Guyana’s infrastructure future.
