Kaieteur News – A 22-year-old taxi driver, on Friday, was arrested after he was found with an unlicensed firearm, along with matching rounds of ammunition at ‘D’ Field Sophia, Greater Georgetown.
The young man has been identified as Tyrese Blair of Sophia.
According to a police report, an Intelligence Officer, along with ranks from the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit, conducted an intelligence-led operation in the Sophia ‘D’ Field area at about 14:00hrs on Friday during which the taxi driver was nabbed.
“The ranks observed a white Allion motorcar bearing registration number PAG 3549 parked on the western side of ‘D’ Field access road, which runs north to south. The vehicle was unoccupied at the time and all windows were up and the doors locked. A group of males was seen liming near the car. One of the ranks approached and inquired from the individuals as to who the owner of the vehicle was,” the police explained.
It was reported that Blair told the ranks that he was the owner of the vehicle. As a result, a search was conducted on him but nothing illegal was found.
Blair was then asked to open the car, where a search was conducted and one black Beretta 9mm pistol (without serial number) containing one magazine and five live 9mm rounds of ammunition were found concealed under the gear shift booth located between the two front seats of the car.
Blair was asked if he was the holder of a Firearm Licence, to which he replied “no”.
He was then told of the offences committed, arrested and taken to the Turkeyen Police Station along with the car, firearm and ammunition.
Investigations are ongoing.
