Mae’s School: M&CC decisions must be in the best interest of the children

Please permit me to add my voice to the ongoing Mae’s School matter, as a former long-standing resident of Subryanville who still visits regularly and maintains close ties to the community.
Any decision by the Mayor and Councillors must be guided first and foremost by what is in the best interest of the children. In my view, uprooting them at this stage would be harmful and should only ever be considered as a last resort. The children are certainly still dealing with the trauma of the fire.
While I fully empathise with the concerns of residents, I remind us that, for many decades, Subryanville has lived with the familiar sounds of children passing, playing, and laughing, along with the long lines of traffic and the blaring of horns. These have, in some sense, been part of our shared experience of living in the community.
If the proprietors give a clear undertaking that the present installation is temporary, then they should be held to their word and afforded the time and space to rebuild. A year is a fair and reasonable period within which to do so. A ‘Monitoring Team’ could oversee and enforce the process.
I believe compromise is possible, and I trust that the school, the municipality, and the residents will work together to find a solution that balances the concerns of all while putting the children’s welfare first.
