Clyde Edwards, a fluent Patamona speaker, hails from Paramakatoi Village, Region 8. He grew up in an extended traditional Patamona family near Yawong Falls, one of the area’s potential tourist attractions.
Clyde recalls he had always been interested in adventuring and exploring from a very young age. He said, “I remember wandering into caves with my cousins to look for caiman and anaconda eggs, although we were warned not to several times. In those times, it was just excitement and exploration. I did not know it was the start of my journey in tourism. As I grew older, I began exploring beyond my community, trekking to places like Orinduik and discovering more of Guyana.”
Clyde holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Tourism Studies from the University of Guyana and currently works at the Guyana Tourism Authority as the Senior Officer of Product Development.
“I believe tourism chose me; I didn’t choose it. It has always been my passion,” Clyde said, reflecting on his journey. “To Indigenous children across Guyana, wherever you are, whether in Waipa or Kaibarupai, you will discover your calling one day. To Indigenous parents and adults, support these children. Their dreams are not hindered solely by economic circumstances but often by a lack of encouragement and belief. The most crucial factor is for others to believe in them, providing hope and opportunities to achieve their aspirations,” he continued.
