Dear Editor,
Over the past few years, I have been a frequent user of social media. What I have noticed is that Guyana, my country, has some of the most despicable, disgraceful, and vulgar so-called influencers on my daily feeds. Many of them laced their commentary with vulgar language, no respect for the audience, kids and the world at large.
Is this the portrayal of Guyana we want?
I will not single out any individual here, but they both reside in and out of Guyana. Some seem to be know-it-alls and have a solution for every problem. What is even more distasteful is to see politicians cozying up to them and appearing on their programmes, because in one way or another, they either support their party or friends of the individual.
The cybersecurity law is more for political convenience than for the protection of individuals targeted in many cases. Even if one wants to take on legal challenges, the cost may deter them from going to court or influence the individuals has with the powers that be. Think of our kids, many of whom have access to various streaming devices, and these feeds pop up.
What are we instilling in them? I see nothing positive in this. I know the internet is a free space, but we must encourage positive and respectful dialogue. We owe it to the audience.
Yours truly,
T. Ram
