Kaieteur News – Elections-bruised A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) may hold the kingmaker role in determining whether the ruling PPP/C or We Invest In Nationhood party takes control of the Regional Democratic Council of Region 8.
At the just concluded elections the PPP/C narrowly won the region beating WIN by less than 300 votes and as such will take up the geographical seat for the region in the National Assembly. However, at the level of the RDC, both the PPP/C and WIN have seven seats with APNU one making up the 15-member council. This scenario provides an opportunity for the parties to work together for the betterment of the region, but sources in the APNU told Kaieteur News that they will carefully decide which side they will support. “We can either support WIN or the PPP/C in exchange for the Vice Chairman…it will be left to the leadership of the party ultimately to decide which way we go,” one senior party source told Kaieteur News.
In the 2020 elections the PPP/C and APNU+AFC faced a similar dilemma, but at that time Lennox Shuman’s Liberty and Justice Party held the deciding vote. The LJP candidate at that time, Jimmy James had signaled his intention to vote with the then APNU+AFC coalition, causing Shuman to cut ties with him and eventually removing him from the council to give the PPP/C control of the RDC.
