Kaieteur News – Things didn’t go according to plan for a bandit who crashed his get-away car after dropping his gun during an armed robbery on Sunday at Zeeglugt North, East Bank Essequibo (EBE).
According to police, the victim, a 40-year-old businessman, Teyon McPhoy, picked up the gun and fired three shots behind the suspect identified as 35-year-old Deol Narayan of Number 70 Village, Corentyne Berbice, Region Six while he was driving away from the scene.
It is unclear if any of the bullets struck the car or the suspect but police said that Narayan crashed into a sand heap a short distance away from where the robbery took place.
The victim told police that he ran up to the car and when he opened the driver’s side, he found the suspect bleeding from an injury to the head.
The police were called in and the gun, a .32 pistol was handed over. Both the suspect and the victim were taken to the DeKinderen Regional Hospital where the suspect was treated and subsequently transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation where he was admitted in a serious condition.
The businessman is assisting police with their investigation. He told detectives that he operates a Superbet at his residence in Zeelugt and the suspect entered his premises around 12:00 hrs. on Sunday.
The suspect placed several bets and lost. He then started crediting bets and it amounted to $140,000.
Sometime after, the suspect asked to use the washroom and he (the businessman) led him to the back of his premises. When the suspect returned, he pointed the gun at the businessman while demanding all the cash he had.
The businessman alleged that he grabbed a quantity of $5000 from a box. However, while grabbing the cash, the suspect and businessman fought. It was during the scuffle that the suspect dropped his gun and attempted to flee.
The businessman picked up the weapon and shot at the bandit.
