Kaieteur News – General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), Bharrat Jagdeo said that his party did not win Region Four, but rather significantly narrowed the opposition’s dominance in the district, cutting the gap to just over 1,000 votes while the opposition lost over 20,000 votes.
Jagdeo made the comments at his party’s weekly press conference on Thursday at Freedom House. He dismissed the leader of the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), Aubrey Norton’s insistence that the 2025 election results in Region Four, which placed the PPP/C as the single largest political party, were implausible.
Jagdeo pointed out that in 2020, APNU dominated Region Four with 116,941 votes against the PPP’s 80,920, a lead of more than 36,000. But by 2025, the political landscape had shifted sharply as APNU’s vote count fell to 46,956 while the PPP climbed to 87,536, an increase of more than 6,000. “This is not impossible in an election in Region Four,” he contended. “And they didn’t drop from 116,000 to 40-something thousand. They dropped to 88,000 combined because WIN took a significant part of APNU’s votes,” he explained to reporters.
We Invest in Nationhood (WIN), led by United States-sanctioned businessman Azruddin Mohamed, according to the declaration made by the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), is the second party to secure the most votes in the region.
Jagdeo also said that the PPP emerged as the single largest political party in key constituencies of North Georgetown, including Sophia, Kitty, Campbellville, Alberttown, Queenstown, Kingston, and Central Georgetown. Together, APNU and WIN managed 16,162 votes, but the PPP’s 13,070 placed it ahead of both individually, making it the strongest force in areas traditionally seen as opposition strongholds. “It’s utter nonsense,” Dr Jagdeo stressed as he dismissed Norton’s narrative, stating that, “In Region 10, APNU moved from complete domination of the region to having lost the region, something we have never seen in this country.”
Meanwhile, Jagdeo also spoke about his party’s overall performance, drawing comparisons between the number of votes secured by the PPP/C in the 2020 and 2025 elections. He said five years ago, the PPP/C won by a margin of just 0.3 per cent, meaning it secured 50.7 per cent of votes compared to the combined opposition’s 49.3 per cent. This meant that the PPP/C won those elections with a difference of 6,390 votes. In this year’s elections, however, the PPP/C secured 55.32 per cent of the vote, compared to the 44.68 per cent for the combined opposition. This translates to 46,530 more votes than the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) and the other smaller political parties combined.
“By any standard, this is a landslide,” the vice president said as he engaged media representatives at the PPP’s headquarters on Robb Street, Georgetown. While GECOM is yet to officially declare the elections, Jagdeo hailed the process as a moment of pride for the entire nation as Guyanese exercised their democratic right in a “free”, “fair”, and “peaceful” manner.
He also noted that across all ten administrative regions, Guyanese were able to cast their ballots freely, openly, and without intimidation and that every international observer mission confirmed the elections were peaceful, transparent, and credible. Additionally, he expressed deep gratitude to PPP/C supporters, particularly the tens of thousands of grassroots workers who tirelessly carried the party’s message to every community, even under difficult circumstances.
