Kaieteur News – Leader of the Alliance for Change (AFC) Nigel Hughes on Wednesday pushed back against warnings by the main opposition -PNCR that citizens should not split their votes. He said by doing so was the only way to get a minority government.
Hughes remined his listeners that there has been a lot of talk coming from some quarters, advising citizens to not split the vote.
He explained that the only time the National Assembly will have the power to stop a budget in order to make sure the money is funneled in the correct direction or to ensure that citizens benefit from the country’s Natural Resource Fund (NRF) is when there is a minority government.
“As we’ve seen in the past five years, the opposition has no power, none, to stop the budget, to stop how the money is spent, to determine how much money you get. So, under our Constitution, the only power you, the people, will ever have, is when you have a minority government,” he stressed.
Hughes advised that in order to get this minority government, citizens have to vote their conscience, and should not be caught between the assumption that there are only two parties and therefore if they cast a vote for one the other may win.
The politician cautioned the electorate that no one owns their vote and the only guarantee for transparency is that in a minority all promises have to be kept when a party is elected.
He urged “You have to vote for the party that has the best plans. And we know neither of the major parties has the best plans, apart from being offensive.”

The public must ensure that no single party has unchecked control of Parliament. Over the past few years, there have been concerns about transparency and accountability, especially regarding how national resources are managed.
Guyanese citizens should stay engaged, ask questions, and push for greater oversight of public spending to safeguard the country’s wealth and ensure fair governance.
