Democracy is on the ballot
As Guyana prepares to vote on September 1, 2025, much attention has been given to the economy, inflation, and household incomes.
Equally important, however, is the question of democracy. Which party has strengthened our institutions, protected civil liberties, and upheld the rule of law?
The answer is clear. The People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) has a track record of defending and restoring democracy in Guyana.
When it returned to government in 1992, the PPP/C ended decades of dictatorship under the People’s National Congress (PNC) and ensured that free and fair elections were held.
Unlike the PNC, which seized power in 1966 and suppressed the will of the people until 1992, the PPP/C has consistently respected constitutional timelines and electoral laws.
The record of the PNC/APNU-AFC is troubling. In 2020, they attempted to subvert the results of free elections, plunging the nation into political crisis.
Only the vigilance of Guyanese citizens, international observers, and foreign governments forced them to accept the will of the people.
That episode proved once again that the PNC/APNU cannot be trusted to safeguard democracy.
By contrast, since returning to office under President Irfaan Ali, the PPP/C has reinforced democratic institutions.
The government has advanced electoral reform, enhanced transparency in budgetary processes, and made fiscal information more accessible.
It has strengthened oversight of oil revenues, unlike the PNC/APNU who still cannot account for the $18 million signing bonus from ExxonMobil.
Moreover, President Ali has upheld civilian control of the security forces, ensuring they serve the constitution rather than political interests.
This is vital for maintaining trust in the rule of law and preserving the rights of every Guyanese.
The upcoming election is not only about economic policy, it is about protecting our democratic way of life.
The PPP/C has proven itself the party of democracy, while the PNC/APNU and WIN have shown disregard for the law when it suits them.
On September 1st, Guyanese must choose the party that restored democracy and continues to defend it: the PPP/C.
