Kaieteur News – Businessman Glenn Lall has poured cold water on Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo’s declaration that whatever his party promises they will deliver, reminding Guyanese of the several promises he made during the 2020 elections campaign but has failed to deliver.
Jagdeo made the comments last week Monday while addressing a gathering at the Pegasus Corporate Suites where the PPP/C launched its 2025 elections manifesto. Themed ‘Forward Together For A Better Guyana’, the document sets out the party’s roadmap to position Guyana as a global leader in climate, energy and food security.
Jagdeo assured the gathering that all the promises outlined in the manifesto will be fulfilled. “As you know, we’re a trustworthy party. Whatever we say, we will do…and that’s why we believe that we will win these elections,” Dr. Jagdeo stated.
The general secretary pointed to the 2020 election campaign, reminding Guyanese that every promise listed in that plan has been implemented. This, he said, was done equitably and fairly, which has strengthened public confidence in the PPP/C’s leadership over the past five years.
“More and more people are attracted not only to our vision, but to the collective that the combined, unified collective that we operate,” he added. Highlighting the party’s unifying approach, the party’s general secretary added that the PPP/C is the only party actively working to bring Guyanese together across racial, religious, and gender lines. According to Dr. Jagdeo, this record of trust and unity is why the PPP/C is confident of securing another mandate from the people of Guyana in the upcoming elections.
However, while serving as Opposition Leader, Jagdeo during the APNU+AFC’s term in office said Guyanese should be sad each time ExxonMobil makes a new oil discovery since the then administration accepted a bad deal. He even went on then to commit to “renegotiate those contracts”. When this newspaper reminded him of the promise back in 2024 at one of his news conferences, Jagdeo said, he never meant that the deal with Exxon would be renegotiated. “Yes, so I said that and I held to the view and not only did I say that, I said that these contracts, some of the, or the contracts will be renegotiated – contracts. So, we had at that time six contracts, that is with Kaieteur, Canje block, several blocks. So, when we said we are not gonna renegotiate the Stabroek contract, and because we are already in production and we will kill the momentum.”
In one of his recent social media commentaries, Lall addressed Jagdeo’s bold declaration, reminding Guyanese that it was the same Jagdeo who had promised public servants over 50% salary increase in the 2020 elections, but failed to deliver. “He promised an end to blackouts, clean water through the pipes, promised state-of-the-art hospitals, schools, with qualified people, he promised roads, and jobs, but has failed to deliver on all of them,” Lall said.
Additionally, Lall said Jagdeo during the run up to the 2020 election promised to ring-fence the oil projects, collect taxes from Exxon and install meters at the pumps. “He also promised back then better contract management of that oil with a Petroleum Commission to advise and oversee everything in that sector. He promised to cap interest rates on loans Exxon charges back to Guyana. He promised to scrutinise Exxon’s inflated bills. He promised real auditors and oil experts to watch Exxon books and bills. He promised to renegotiate the Exxon deal. All that he said out his own mouth, then when he got into office, he brazingly watched all Guyana in our face and said he never promised those things,” Lall commented.
Additionally, Lall said Jagdeo and party also promised transparency in all things, yet over six months, civil society and unions have been protesting for access to basic information. “And when he was asked about this his answer was ‘when we go back in office, we will fix it. Trust me.” Lall questioned why should Guyanese should trust Jagdeo: “after 30 years of broken promises, we must still trust him and his promises?”
According to Lall, Jagdeo had also promised to publish the Wales Gas-to-Energy contract so that Guyanese can be au fait with the details, but that was not done. “He promised to strengthen the Natural Resource Fund, the oil account, and put in place a real, independent body to safeguard and manage our oil money. But what did he actually do? He changed the law to suit himself and his party, so they can dip into the oil account at will, spend out billions, and never have to answer to the people of Guyana. Instead of protecting the oil wealth for every Guyanese, he turned it into his party’s personal piggy bank,” Lall asserted.
The businessman said there isn’t any promise that Jagdeo has made that he has kept. “Whatever he promises, he betrays. Whenever he promises he ends up biting his tongue and barking at people who say -what happened to the promises you made. Guyana, the man promised the sun, moon, and stars and delivered blackout, candlelight, mud water, and debts. He promised to set up a team to manage the oil fund, instead he changed it to suit himself. When Jagdeo makes a promise, Guyanese are guaranteed one thing – he falls down, forgets, fails to keep his promises; he goes from Mr. Promise to Mr. Pitiful.”
