Kaieteur News – Following the devastating fire that completely destroyed sections of the Kwakwani Secondary School, Region 10, the Ministry of Education has announced that measures will be put in place for students to return to the school by the last week of September.

According to the ministry, the fire of unknown origin, destroyed several sections of the school, including the Information Technology laboratory, the Head Teacher’s office, the auditorium, which was being used as classrooms, the library, staff room, and both students’ and teachers’ washrooms.

“Within hours of the incident, a team led by Deputy Chief Education Officer (Administration), Mrs. Tiffany Harvey, accompanied by Assistant Chief Education Officers, Mr. Sherwyn Blackman and Mrs. Sauda Kadir-Grant, visited the school to assess the situation and determine appropriate measures to facilitate the timely resumption of classes,” the ministry stated.

Following their assessment, the Ministry of Education, in collaboration with the regional education department, stated that they are satisfied that adequate arrangements will be in place to facilitate the return of students to Kwakwani Secondary School by the last week of September 2025.

Rebuild

Additionally, the Ministry has given its assurance to all stakeholders that the Kwakwani Secondary School will be rebuilt expeditiously, with improved and modern infrastructure that meets higher standards.

Similar commitments were echoed by Minister of Public Works Juan Edghill on Sunday announced on his Facebook page that the government will “move speedily” to rebuild the school if the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) is re-elected. In a pre-recorded video shared on the platform, Edghill expressed regret over the school’s destruction, stating, “Whatever is the cause of that fire, it is regrettable. The children need to be served, and the community needs to be served.”

He also emphasized that alternative arrangements would be made to prevent any learning loss during the reconstruction period.

Meanwhile, the Guyana Police Force on Sunday, reported that a police corporal stationed at the Mackenzie Police Station was attending the annual village fair at the Kwakwani Ball field when he noticed a large fire coming from the Pathville area. He immediately informed ranks at the Kwakwani Police Station, who responded to the scene, witnessing the school engulfed in flames.

The police then summoned auxiliary staff, and a fire pick-up unit with two staff members, who attempted to extinguish the blaze. However, by that time, the one-storey concrete structure, which is approximately 30 feet wide and 100 feet long, was already entirely destroyed.

Police reported that the school was protected by Homesafe Security Service, and a security guard was on duty at the time of the incident. The guard informed police that while conducting routine checks around the compound, he noticed smoke emanating from the headmistress’s office, located on the south western side of the building. He subsequently contacted the school supervisor.
