Dear Editor,
Kaieteur News – In traveling around Guyana and in diasporic countries, queries were raised why GoAMERICA is not contesting the elections, and at times addressed me as the leader of the movement and its prospective Presidential candidate were it to contest the elections.
I was also asked why I suddenly decided to join or form a new political movement when I was involved in political struggle since independence and combatted electoral fraud since 1968 with PPP being the primary beneficiary of my activism. People also asked how and why the GoAMERICA movement came about.
Contrary to what some feel or penned, I am not now nor ever was the leader of the GoAMERICA movement. And I was not affirmed as prospective presidential candidate although not averse to the idea. Someone else was proposed as potential Presidential contender. A coalition was also discussed. I was among the conceivers, initiators, and founders of the movement. The concept was discussed and debated among many Guyanese at home and the diaspora, and all members of the movement agreed to push the idea. It was subsequently uncovered that a similar idea was proposed years ago but not actively pushed.
The present movement took life after President Trump proposed incorporating several foreign territories, including Canada, Greenland, Panama Canal, Gaza, etc., as parts of USA. In light of the existential threat faced from Venezuela and serious internal division, it is felt that, it is in Guyana’s best interest to become an autonomous territory of USA along the line of American Samoa or Puerto Rico, etc. The President was written to; Guyana has more to offer than several of the territories that President Trump wishes to incorporate into USA.
Discussions on making Guyana a part of USA were held with American politicians, including members of Congress, from both major parties for their views. They are very supportive. However, they were sensitive about the issue of Guyanese sovereignty. They queried whether Guyanese would be willing to give up their sovereignty and nationality to become Americans. If Guyana were to become a part of USA, then Guyanese would become Americans. The issue of Guyana becoming part of America was tested in surveys. Very few Guyanese were opposed to becoming Americans. The biggest hurdle was convincing Guyanese that Guyana could actually become part of USA; they, except a handful of left wingers and ultra nationalists, all want to become Americans. The left and the nationalists guard their independence and sovereignty although they want USA to protect Guyana from Venezuelan aggression. Guyanese don’t like the way the Trump Administration is treating immigrants. If Guyana is part of USA, then Guyanese, including undocumented, would no longer be immigrants; they would automatically become American citizens.
I penned countless articles on the state of governance in Guyana over the last several decades. One cannot be satisfied or pleased with a lot of what has passed as governance. I also feel that Guyana should cement ties with USA. More Guyanese (including those of Guyanese ancestry) live in USA than in Guyana. The Guyanese people in USA are grateful to make USA their home where they live a better life than in Guyana. Their families and friends in Guyana also want to join them in USA. It is felt that it will be better just to make Guyana part of USA in which Guyanese can enjoy similar rights and privileges as counterparts in USA. The above reasons largely drive my thinking and that of the movement I helped found.
The fact that GoAMERICA is not contesting the elections does not mean it has abandoned its idea of making Guyana an adjunct of USA and of Guyanese becoming Americans. The movement was approached by forces in Guyana and USA and urged to stand down. Time also was not on its side to contest the 2025 elections. The movement wishes to thank the many who offered support and who came forward as volunteers and those who offered financial support. Many said they would have voted for GoAMERICA. The movement did not solicit or accepted funding but intends to do so after the election to further its goal of making Guyana a part of USA.
Yours sincerely,
Dr. Vishnu Bisram (PhD)
