Kaieteur Sports – Defending Berbice under-13 champions, Rose Hall Town Poonai Pharmacy, had to fight to the end to defeat a determined Tucber Park Cricket Club to advance to their sixth consecutive finals in the ancient county. Playing in the first semifinals at the Area H Ground in blistering heat, the home team was led to a close two-wicket victory by their captain, Jayden Ganpat, who led in front with both bat and ball.
The visitors won the toss and elected to take first strike in a perfect batting pitch, but were never allowed to score freely as the new ball pair of Dishawn La Cruz and Anthony Srikissoon bowled well. Openers A. Felix and Dequan Lewis were kept to 20 from eight overs in the 30 overs before Lewis was bowled by the impressive Anthony Srikissoon for 12. The attractive left-handed batsman, Ashton DeJonge, joined Felix as they both struggled against the impressive bowling attack. Felix was then caught and bowled by left-arm spinner Devish Narine for 12 as Tucber Park reached 52 for 2 in the 20th over. The rest of their batting line-up then fell apart as the Rose Hall Town Poonai Pharmacy bowlers never eased up the pressure. DeJonage top scored with 22 as his team was dismissed for 90 in the 29th over. Left-arm spinner Divesh Narine took three wickets for twelve runs from six overs and was well supported by off-spinner Akeeam Fraser with 3 for 10, while skipper Jayden Ganpat took his tournament haul to fifteen wickets with a spell of two for 14 from six overs. Anthony Srikissoon 1 for 10 from six overs and Khemraj Bharrat 1 for 15 were the other successful bowlers for the home team.
Needing to score 91 from 30 Overs to advance to the finals, the defending champions slumped to 52 for 6 in the 15th over as several of their batsmen fell to poor shot selection. Ganpat, who played for Berbice last year, used all his experience to top score with an unbeaten 22 to see his team home at 92 for 8 in the 26th over. Akeeam Fraser and Royston Crandon scored ten runs apiece. Bowling for the disappointed Tucber Park were A Samuel with 2 for 11, S DeJonge 2 for 13 and R DeJonge 2 for 18.
The Rose Hall Town Poonai Pharmacy now awaits the winner of the Albion versus Cotton Tree semifinals to play the finals at a venue to be determined by the Berbice Cricket Board Competition Committee. The defending champions have reached all five finals of the BCB under-13 tournaments and have emerged as champions on three occasions. Players like Tameshwar Deochand, Raffel McKenzie, Leon Reddi and Sohail Mohamed are products of the team and have gone on to represent Guyana at the National level.
