Kaieteur News – President Irfaan Ali on Friday told residents of Region Two that a branch of the College of Medical Sciences from the University of Guyana will be established in the region.
The president made the announcement while delivering the feature address at the commissioning of the $6.6billion new Lima Regional Hospital on the Essequibo Coast.
“Right now, because of the free education we are giving, we have extraordinary numbers of applicants in the medical field whether it is pharmacy, dentistry, dental technicians, nursing, medical sciences, biology and the University of Guyana cannot accommodate all of them,” President Ali said.
According to the President, he has since given Minister of Health, Dr. Frank Anthony and Minister of Education, Priya Manickchand the instruction to attach a number of medical colleges from the University of Guyana in communities outside of Region Four.
Currently, through the Ministry of Health, an $881 million Nursing School and Training Complex is being constructed at Suddie, Region Two.
During his remarks, the head-of-state mentioned that the new school will have enough capacity to accommodate persons, so in the night it would be used as the Guyana Medical College Essequibo branch where nurses, physicians, dentists and other medical professionals will be trained.
In addition, President Ali said that the senior doctors and technicians from Region Two, “will now have the opportunity to benefit from that tax incentive and get a second salary teaching at that institution here in Essequibo.”
The president recently announced that a branch of the College of Medical Sciences will be established in Region Three and students will be accommodated at the newly commissioned Tuschen Secondary School building.
