Kaieteur News – Fraser’s Educational Institute (FEI) is an academy of learning in Berbice that is rapidly gaining momentum as an upcoming institution to be taken notice of in Guyana’s education system.
But before it opened its doors as a private learning institution on September 1, 2014, it was a mere arrangement for lessons by Mr. Marlon Fraser, the principal and owner of the expanding private school.
Diving into the history of FEI, the principal related that he operated a lesson that ran by the name ‘Let’s Pass Mathematics’, which tended to Form 5, but was extended by strong requests to the junior Forms because of its groundbreaking accomplishments in the sore area of Mathematics. This was done, with inclusions made also to Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) English Language for Forms 1-5. The thrill of their then success was shortlived, however.
“Our operations took a turn in February of 2008 when the Ministry of Education prohibited public school teachers from holding lessons in schools and charging students for same. We were faced with the challenge of finding a new venue to hold classes. During the said February 2008, we started renting the Hopetown Community Centre and we changed the name of our organization to ‘Fraser’s Educational Institute’,” the head of the school disclosed.
Fast forward to 2025 and the institute has blossomed into a stand out private school in Berbice. Matter of fact it is the first and only private school in the region.
This year’s performances at the CSEC examinations have been nothing but exceptional, and the principal tipped his hat to his students for achieving in 2025 what he dubbed as the school’s “peak year of performance.”
Outlining the reasons for this, the elated FEI head divulged that this year, the school obtained its highest number of Grade 1 passes since it came on stream as a private school, to the figure of 215. Further, it achieved its highest number of Grade 2 passes, which stands at 166.
“I would also like to highlight that it is the first time since our existence in 2014 that we produced a national top performer,” Fraser shared elatedly. The school’s top CSEC student, Odwin Bouyea, earned third place in the country, he revealed. This is premised on preliminary data released, and confirmation will be made by the final published results.
Owing to this year’s significant showcase by the students of FEI at the examinations, the school has gained some more attention, having for the first time one of its students in the national top 10.
Added to that, the school, he revealed, has been leading the charts for Region 5 with regard to CSEC results for an impressive stretch of 4-5 consecutive years, producing the regional top performer each year throughout that prolific period.
“We’ve always had at least four out of the top ten performers for the Region#5…..this year, I would want to think that we will dominate the top ten..”
Adding to the hype of its 2025 results, the school has also received a call up for five of its students to the Education Ministry’s national release ceremony for the CSEC results, owing to their praiseworthy accomplishment of 12+ Grade 1 passes. These are feats that lay evidence to the credibility of FEI’s impact on the local education system.
As is common with any organization, FEI is confronted with its own unique challenges. One major stress-incurring ordeal revolved around acquiring capital for expansion. Shedding details on this, Fraser revealed: “I recall when we were building the school, I approached a particular bank for a loan and I wasn’t given the loan. I was rejected.

The two locations of FEI are housed at Chapel Street in New Amsterdam, and at Fort Wellington on the West Coast of Berbice.

“And then I turned to IPED and IPED rescued us. IPED gave me the funding to at least start the building,” Fraser continued in his reflection.
In harmony with that encouragement, his ambitions received a strong muscle of GYD $3Million from his mother, Mirriam Murray towards the building project of the FEI. This warming deed by his mother has been given a customary swell of praise on repeat by Fraser at each graduation ceremony for the learning institution, and students and teachers alike would be reminded of the fact that Mrs. Murray was the first individual to invest in FEI.
And there’s no complacency to be added to the upswing the school has enjoyed. Fraser and the FEI are in accelerated expansion mode. Currently, they retain a daycare facility along with a pre-school setup. In September, there will be the official opening of a nursery school, and this will supplement the FEI’s academic catering, as it is presently delivering secondary level education.
Absorbing the positives of these prospects, the principal affirmed that “We are on the verge of massive expansion, and things are a little bit better now…”
FEI’s growing presence is pinned by two branches to date, with one situated at Chapel Street in New Amsterdam, and the main branch at Fort Wellington on the West Coast of Berbice. At present, the Fort Wellington location holds in excess of 300 students, while the New Amsterdam branch has in proximity of 150 students.
The school’s curriculum is executed by a 22 capable teachers, many of whom are young and foster much youthful modern reliability with the school’s demographic to a considerable extent, which makes for pleasant learning experiences.

I’m so elated reading this article and I applaud Mr Fraser on his accomplishments. I’m from Jamaica and I have a similar story which started in 2014.
