Kaieteur News – A fire on Thursday at Charity, Essequibo Coast, Region Two destroyed a two-story building which housed a Chinese supermarket on the bottom flat and the living quarters of a businessman and his wife on the top flat.
Reports reaching Kaieteur News are that the fire started around 13:30hrs at Best Choice Supermarket located at Lot 103 Charity River Dam, Essequibo.
The supermarket is owned by a 22-year-old Chinese woman identified as Siyi Zheng but the property is owned by 53-year-old Haimchandra Narine and his wife Vernel Narine who were occupying the top-flat of the building.
The Guyana Police Force (GPF) and the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) have launched an investigation into the fire that destroyed the building. According to reports, the Chinese woman said she was in the cashier booth when her female employee told her that there is a fire in the ceiling of the supermarket. She (The Chinese Woman) reportedly picked up a fire extinguisher and attempted to put out the flames but it began spreading rapidly. When it got beyond her control she and her employee ran out of the building.
At the time only Vernel Narine, one of the owners of the property, was home in the top flat and according to reports, she too ran out as the entire building quickly became engulfed in flames. Fire fighters responded and were able to contain the fire but could not save the property from being completely destroyed.
