Kaieteur News – In the quiet riverside town of Bartica, where the Essequibo, Mazaruni, and Cuyuni rivers converge, a young man with big dreams has been preparing for the stage of his life. Jose Roberts, Guyana’s newly crowned Mr. Universe 2025, is gearing up to make history when he represents the 592 at the international competition in Panama this October.
At just 22 years old, the dancer and choreographer carries the hopes of a nation that hasn’t seen representation at the prestigious pageant since 2023, when Rakesh Permaul placed Third Runner-up. Now, Roberts is determined to go one step further, bringing home Guyana’s first-ever Mr. Universe crown.
Growing up in Bartica’s tranquil environment, Roberts learned values that would shape his journey: humility, kindness, and an unwavering determination to achieve his dreams. These qualities served him well during the rigorous selection process, where he emerged victorious against several other Guyanese contenders to earn his spot as the country’s representative.
But Roberts’ path to this moment hasn’t been without challenges. As a male dancer in a field often misunderstood, he has faced personal struggles that have only strengthened his resolve to create change. “I was motivated to join the pageant to expand my platform for my advocacy, eradicating the stigma against male dancers that I have personally experienced,” Roberts explains. His mission extends beyond the dance floor, as he also aims to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS prevention among youth.
Roberts’ advocacy for male dancers comes from a deeply personal place. He understands the fears that many young men face when considering dance as a pursuit, particularly concerns about how their sexuality might be perceived or questioned. “I know the common fear is that they think their sexuality will be challenged,” he acknowledges. “But I can personally attest that it doesn’t. In fact, it makes you an all-round individual. It teaches you discipline and how to be a well-rounded person. It keeps you involved with everything in and around your community.”
This message of empowerment and inclusion forms the cornerstone of his platform, one he hopes to amplify on the global stage. Roberts brings valuable pageant experience to his Mr. Universe bid, having previously held two national titles: Mr. Teen Glocal and Mr. Grand Guyana. Both experiences representing Guyana have given him insights into the areas where he can improve and refine his approach. “Because I held two titles prior and represented Guyana well, I know the exact areas I have to improve in, and I’m working extremely hard to make Guyana proud,” he says with characteristic determination.
The Mr. Universe competition, scheduled for October 12th in Panama, will see Roberts compete against representatives from over 50 countries across four challenging segments: Fashion, Swimsuit, National Costume, and Question & Answer. Each category will test different aspects of his preparation, poise, and ability to represent Guyana on the world stage.
For Roberts, the competition represents more than personal achievement. it’s an opportunity to inspire youth across Guyana and beyond to pursue their dreams despite obstacles. “My hope is to inspire youths to pursue their dreams regardless of challenges,” he states. “I want to be an inspiration and voice for many across the globe.” Should Roberts achieve his goal of becoming Guyana’s first Mr. Universe, he envisions using the expanded platform to further his advocacy work. His dual focus on supporting male dancers and HIV/AIDS awareness among youth reflects a commitment to addressing issues that often receive insufficient attention.
The young advocate believes that breaking down barriers in one area can create ripple effects, encouraging others to challenge stereotypes and pursue their passions without fear of judgment.
As October approaches, Roberts continues his intensive preparation, knowing that he carries not just his own dreams, but those of every young Guyanese person who has ever felt discouraged from pursuing their passion. His journey from the peaceful rivers of Bartica to the international stage in Panama embodies the spirit of determination and hope that defines Guyana’s rising generation.
Whether he returns home with the crown or not, Jose Roberts has already made his mark as a trailblazer, using his platform to advocate for change and inspire others to dance to their own rhythm, regardless of what others might think. In a world where young men often feel pressured to conform to narrow definitions of masculinity, Roberts stands as a powerful example that strength comes in many forms, and that grace, artistry, and advocacy can be just as powerful as any traditional measures of success.
