Kaieteur Sports – A masterful hundred from Shamar Apple ensured Guyana secured a draw against Windwards when their first-round battle ended yesterday at the National Cricket Center Ground.
The wicketkeeper-batsman led with a classy 123, his maiden ton at the level which pushed Guyana to 264 all out with help from Adrian Hetmyer (47), in reply to Windwards’ 1st innings 281-9 declared.
Windwards bowling unit did a great job to contain the likes of Apple and company as Desrond Mitchell (3-41), Elran Glasgow (3-45), Bjorn Franchise (2-31) and Tyler Venner (2-26); did the lion’s share of the work.
Windwards then posted 84-2 in the second innings, after first innings centurion and skipper Theo Edward retired hurt on 13, with Jordan Charles finishing on 47 not out.
After Guyana lost their top 4 batsmen with just 32 runs on the board, the repairs were expertly handled by Apple who alongside with Hetmyer forged a huge century partnership which gave Guyana the shot in the arm needed.
Apple played a composed hand facing some 144 balls during his stay at the crease, finding the boundary on 16 occasions with three going for the maximum amount.
Hetmyer played a sensible hand, rotating the strike as he punched 4 fours in his workman-like innings.
Following the breaking of the partnership, and the eventual dismissals of both Apple and Hetmyer, Ramdheol hung around but soon ran out of partners.
In other games played, Trinidad and Tobago posted 252-8 before declaring against Barbados surged to 257-9. The Trinis then ended on in their second innings 89-3 as their match ended in a draw.
Leewards were bowled out for 96 batting first before keeping Jamaica to 75 all out. Leewards would then post 128-2 by the time stumps arrived, ending with a 149-run lead.
The second round continues on Saturday with Guyana looking to go two up when they face hosts Trinidad and Tobago from 10:00h at the legendary Queen’s Park Oval. (Clifton Ross)
