Kaieteur Sports – A pugnacious hundred from Windward Islands captain Theo Edward helped keep his team’s momentum high as they ready themselves for a tough final day versus the Guyanese at the National Cricket Center, Trinidad & Tobago.
Windwards were looking iffy on 131-5 by lunch but would eventually go onto declare on 281-9, with their captain Edward taking his score to 77 off 69 balls, looking to press onwards as he inched closer towards what would turn out to be a crucial first innings ton.
The captain then picked up from where he left off following the resumption of play, motoring his way to a splendid hundred as he owned the first phase of the afternoon session accumulating some 19 fours and 4 sixes, narrowly missing what could have been a bigger hundred.
Tyler Venner (47) did an exceptional job down the order but missed out on a half-century, removed by Amsterdam who had accounted for the wickets of all the Windwards top-scorers; including Cody Fontinellie 20.
Guyana’s bowling attack toiled on the opening day, despite speedster Micah Amsterdam bagging 5-58, with Gibran Yacoob (3-49) chipping in prior to the Windwards declaration which came in 77th over.
At stumps, Guyana faced an uphill battle going into today’s run, being reduced to 262, after losing the important wicket of opener Lomar Seecharran who spanked three fours in his 17 off 18 deliveries before being knocked over by Bjorn Fannis (1-11).
All-rounder Emmanuel Lewis (1) then fell to Venner (1-4) as Guyana were dealt severe blows prior to the close of play, leaving the Guyanese (25-2) with much work to do ahead of today’s final day of action. (Clifton Ross)
