APNU targets youth entrepreneurship scholarship for athletes in development plan
Kaieteur News – The A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) on Tuesday, released its Youth Development Plan in observance of International Youth Day, outlining key policies such as the enforcement of the Youth Empowerment Scheme (YES) and a National Youth Investment Fund.
In a statement on its official Facebook page, APNU announced that its Youth Development Plan is built around two core components: the National Youth Empowerment Scheme (YES) and the National Entrepreneurial Scheme.
Key elements of the plan include the introduction of intellectual property laws and other legislative measures to support young artists. APNU also proposes the implementation of medical insurance for national sportsmen and women, along with full sponsorship for national athletes.
As part of its National Youth Investment Fund, the plan outlines several initiatives to build youth capacity in business and governance. These include investment opportunities in a modernised stock exchange, public service training, and access to grants and soft loans for young entrepreneurs. Furthermore, the plan commits to providing local and international scholarships for youths in reputable universities, promoting youth involvement in sustainable modern agriculture, and issuing special mining permits to young people. It also promises to establish a social safety net for vulnerable youth.
In addition to these measures, APNU reaffirmed its commitment to providing a $50,000 monthly cash grant to students enrolled in tertiary and technical-vocational education, and to raising the tax threshold to $400,000 for working youths.
Meanwhile, the APNU in a statement released for International Youth Day, emphasised that the YES initiative will “create pathways for the advancement of youths” and that the National Youth Investment Fund will allow young people to access grants and low-interest loans. The plan also includes the establishment of a permanent consultative mechanism to ensure that young voices are heard and considered in national decision-making.
Highlighting the role of youth in national development, APNU stated, “The APNU Coalition believes that for young people to play this role, they must be enabled and empowered. Our plan for youths, therefore, prioritises such goals as increasing their capabilities, opportunities, and freedoms so that they can be their best selves and exploit their full potential; and respecting young people as capable of defining their own goals in life and making their own decisions that affect them.”
