Dear Editor,
The bribery allegations facing Minister Susan Rodrigues cannot be brushed aside. This call for an international investigation is made against the backdrop of a leaked voice recording, released over the weekend on Melly Mel Page, allegedly featuring Minister Rodrigues and Amier Ahamad—another individual who should also be investigated. If authentic, this recording raises serious ethical and legal questions that demand urgent answers.
Unfortunately, our country has a reputation for sweeping high-level wrongdoing under the rug—until the United States forces the truth into the open through sanctions. On June 11, 2024, the U.S. Treasury’s OFAC sanctioned Nazar Mohamed, his son Azruddin Mohamed, and senior public official Mae Thomas for large-scale gold export duty fraud and bribery. In June 2025, four more Guyanese nationals, including a law enforcement official, were sanctioned for coordinating international cocaine trafficking. These cases prove a simple, shameful truth: it is often Washington, not Georgetown, that exposes corruption in Guyana.
Meanwhile, our police and investigative agencies appear more eager to pursue politically convenient cases than to confront those with genuine political and economic clout. That is why, in the case of Minister Rodrigues, only an inquiry with international oversight will have the credibility to uncover the truth.
This is not about partisan advantage—it is about protecting the integrity of public office. Minister Rodrigues is seeking re-election. The public has the right to know whether she has conducted herself lawfully and ethically. Silence or delay will only deepen suspicion and reinforce the belief that in Guyana, the powerful are above the law until foreign governments say otherwise.
Yours faithfully,
B. Singh
