Indigenous Peoples’ Commission commemorates World Indigenous Peoples Day 2025

The Indigenous Peoples’ Commission (IPC) proudly joins the global community in commemorating World Indigenous Peoples Day 2025, under this year’s United Nations theme: “Indigenous Youth as Agents of Change for Self-determination.”
This international observance reaffirms the importance of preserving and promoting the rights, cultures, and identities of Indigenous Peoples around the world, while spotlighting the essential role of Indigenous youth in shaping a just and sustainable future.
The IPC honors the enduring contributions of Guyana’s Indigenous Peoples—our first peoples—whose ancestral knowledge, cultural richness, and stewardship of the environment are fundamental to our national identity. We especially recognize our Indigenous youth, who are leading movements in education, advocacy, sustainable development, and cultural preservation.
The Commission remains committed to advocating for the rights of Indigenous communities, particularly in areas such as land tenure security, access to quality education and health services, climate resilience, and political participation. In line with the theme, the IPC continues to support programs that empower young Indigenous leaders and promote intergenerational knowledge transfer.
In recognition of this significant day, the IPC will participate in and support several commemorative events across the regions, including cultural exhibitions, youth forums, and panel discussions focused on Indigenous leadership, language revitalization, and economic development. As Guyana moves forward, the Commission calls on all stakeholders—government agencies, civil society, and private sector partners—to work collaboratively to ensure that Indigenous voices, especially those of youth, are included in decision-making processes that affect their communities and the nation as a whole.
Let us reflect, celebrate, and renew our collective commitment to Indigenous rights, dignity, and self-determined development.
