Dear Editor,
President Ali’s speech at the UN contains one paragraph on Cuba. Here it is:
“We reiterate our call for a viable solution for Cuba, one that is peaceful, people centered, development-focused and allows for the full aspirations of the Cuban people to be realized. Guyana reiterates CARICOM’s offer to play a meaningful role in achieving this objective”.
I wish President Ali had spoken more directly on Cuba. Call for FFE (free and fair elections), in a multi-party system of democracy. Not a continuation of Cuba’s one-party system of democracy.
And, the mechanics of obtaining an FFE in a multi-party system? Secretary of State Marco Rubio has all the leverages at his disposal to put that system in effect. What is Marco waiting for?
I believe the misery of the Cuban people would end on the morning after the winner of a multi-party election takes power, because billions of dollars would flow-in to rebuild Cuba. The shortage of food and fuel would end within days. The Cuban people would enter a new era of freedom that they have not had since 1958. U.S. sanctions would be removed on the morning after the elections. President Ali appears to be a more confident leader now, leading a nation on the rise. That should empower him to speak more directly on issues. Stop speaking in meaningless word-salads.
