Dear Editor,
I am writing to bring attention to a growing concern among residents of Lethem and surrounding communities regarding the recent increase in taxi fares for short-distance trips within Lethem Township.
It has become increasingly common for some taxi operators, particularly some newer drivers entering the town, to charge passengers as much as G$1,000 per person for short drops within the township, including areas such as Tabatinga. This is becoming a serious burden on ordinary residents who depend on taxis for transportation to work, school, businesses, the market, health facilities and other essential services.
While I understand that taxi operators have expenses, including fuel, vehicle maintenance, insurance and other operating costs, fare increases should be reasonable and should take into consideration the distance travelled and the economic circumstances of the people who depend on these services. A short trip within Lethem should not automatically cost G$1,000 per passenger. When a family of four has to pay G$4,000 simply to travel a short distance, the cost can quickly become unaffordable, particularly for low-income families, elderly persons, students and people who have no alternative means of transportation.
What is even more concerning is that some drivers appear to be adopting these higher fares simply because other drivers are doing the same. If this continues unchecked, what is currently considered a high fare could eventually become the accepted norm for transportation within our township. I am therefore appealing to the relevant authorities, taxi associations and other stakeholders to look into the matter and consider whether there are appropriate and transparent fare guidelines for taxi services within Lethem and Region #9.
At the same time, I want to acknowledge the taxi operators who continue to charge fair and reasonable fares. These drivers deserve recognition because they understand that providing a service to the community also means treating passengers fairly. Lethem is growing, and with that growth comes the need for proper and responsible transportation services. Taxi operators and passengers should be able to coexist fairly, with prices that allow drivers to operate their businesses while ensuring that transportation remains accessible to the people of our community. I hope this matter will receive the attention it deserves before unreasonable fares become permanently established in Lethem.
Yours faithfully,
Ryan Reid
