Kaieteur News – Mayor of Georgetown and A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) candidate, Alfred Mentore, has unveiled plans to significantly expand the Stabroek Market Bazaar and transform the adjacent tarmac into a modern parking facility.
Speaking at a public meeting held at the Stabroek market square Georgetown, on Friday, Mentore said if elected, APNU intends to increase the bazaar’s capacity to accommodate up to 3,000 vendors, tripling the current number.
Addressing supporters, Mentor stressed the importance of providing proper infrastructure for vendors, stating, “When we are finished, we will have triple the amount of vendors once the market is extended.” He emphasised that the current setup does not adequately support small businesses and that a structured, expanded space would allow vendors to operate more sustainably.
In a follow-up interview with Kaieteur News, the mayor elaborated on the vision, noting that the expansion would be both vertical and horizontal, including a multi-level structure. The development will not only include a modernised market, but also a parking lot and centralising vending in a new vendors’ arcade mall. The project aims to free up streets for other businesses, with funding balanced between oil market funds and potential loans. The development will provide permanent spaces for vendors, benefiting the local community and economy.
“We have a number of plans as it relates to the Stabroek Market itself. It’s a case where we did a feasibility sponsored by the British High Commission, with help from our Ghanaian partners friends to be able to come up with that study. We have about 1000 vendors here, but we will work with it to be able to triple it to about 3000,” Mentore explained.
He further added, “We’ll be able to work and help many of the vendors who are plying on our streets, because we want to be able to give them something that is permanent and something that makes sense, something that’s an asset, and that’s something they can pass on to their families whenever they should have a will.”
Mentore also mentioned that APNU plans to enhance the nearby Vendors Arcade Mall to accommodate even more vendors. “So, over time, everybody will not be all over the street. We’ll be able to centralise vending at where vendors are supposed to be, and the streets will become freer and more easier for the other business to also exist,” he said.
While the full development will take time, the mayor indicated that within the first 100 days of an APNU administration, they expect to sign a contract to begin construction.
“It won’t take 100 days, but at least within the 100 days, we are hopeful that we’ll be able to sign the contract with whoever it may be to be able to develop the market, because the feasibility, as well as the contractor and how we’ll be able to fund it with a balance of oil market balance of oil money as well as maybe some loans between how we treat with it, “Mentore stated.
He concluded by expressing optimism that these projects will not only improve livelihoods for vendors, but also enhance the overall look and function of one of Georgetown’s largest commercial spaces. “Those are matters that will be ironed out between the leader, and others, so that we be able to address this, like I said, to have this system in place and committed to have that between the 100 days,” he said.
