Kaieteur Sports – In a revisit to the annals of cricket history shared by West Indies pacer Colin Croft, it has been noted that in the recently concluded five match Anderson-Tendulkar trophy series, Shubman Gill piled up over 700 runs, Mohammed Siraj claimed more than 20 wickets, and Harry Brook took 10 catches. England, under the leadership of Ben Stokes and Ollie Pope, won all five tosses. Brilliant individual performances scattered across both teams.
Now, imagine a scenario where one individual does all of that – scores more than 700 runs, picks up 20 wickets, takes 10 catches, and wins all five tosses as captain. In today’s game, it would sound like fantasy. But if you travel back to 1966, you’ll find a man who turned that fantasy into reality.
Against England, in a 5 match Test series, Sobers scored 722 runs, took 20 wickets, held on to 10 catches, and as captain, walked out for the toss five times and won every single one. It was complete and unmatched mastery of the game.
Series result? West Indies won 3-1.
On this very day when India beat England in 1966, at Headingley, West Indies went 3-0 up in that series, sealing it with a game to spare.
