Kaieteur News – The Amerindian Village of Shulinab in Region Nine, will benefit from a new secondary school, which will be constructed at the cost of $350 million.
According to the Ministry of Education, Minister Priya Manickchand on Tuesday turned the sod to mark the commencement of construction for the new school.
Some 20 contracts have been awarded to facilitate the development of the new facility, which includes dormitories, sanitary blocks, teachers’ quarters, dining and kitchen areas, electrical works, water storage systems, a tarmac, perimeter fencing, and the school buildings themselves. These contracts were awarded through the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board (NPTAB).
The education ministry stated that the project forms part of the government’s continued commitment to closing the gap between hinterland and coastland education. For decades, students in places like Shulinab have faced limited access to secondary education, often having to travel long distances or leave their communities entirely in order to attend school.
The school is scheduled to be completed in six to eight months.
“This school in Shulinab marks a major development milestone for generations of students. It’s part of a broader push by the ministry to ensure that every child in Guyana, no matter where they are born, has access to quality education. Currently, the Government of Guyana is undertaking the construction of more than 40 new secondary schools across the country as part of its unwavering commitment to improving access to education at every level. This national effort is particularly focused on the hinterland regions, where the aim is to achieve universal secondary education by ensuring that indigenous and remote communities are no longer left behind,” the ministry reported.

Minister of Education, Priya Manickchand on Tuesday joining village leaders and education officials in turning the sod for a new secondary school at Shulinab Village, Region Nine.
In Region Nine, new secondary schools for Katoka and Yupukari village have already been commissioned, while secondary schools for Maruranau, Nappi, Tabatinga, Karasabai, Massara, and Karaudarnau villages are under construction.
According to reports, the projects are vital in reducing the distances students must travel to access education and providing access to children in completing secondary education close to home.
Meanwhile, speaking at the ceremony, Minister Manickchand disclosed that the school will cater for around 250 students, allowing children from Shulinab Katuur, Baitoon, Parikwarinau, Meriwau, Quiko and Potarinau to attend.
According to the minister, the Shulinab Secondary when completed, will be the second of its kind in South Central Rupununi. “You know, Sand Creek secondary is the only secondary school in South Central, and I’m happy to say that started up when I was minister also between 2011 and 2015. This is going to be the second secondary school in South Central, which will take off the entire catchment of South Central.”
She added that the government is not only constructing buildings, but making sure when children go into those buildings, they have a quality education with teachers and resources that they need.
Joining the minister on Tuesday was Toshao of Shulinab, Nicholas Fredericks who said, “It is history we making here in Shulinab, we have been behind this school since I remember I joined the council in 2002, and it is a pleasure and an honor for me as a Toshao to really have the development take place under my council. It is something that we were asking for a very long time.”
Meanwhile, Toshao of Potarinau Village Ryan Ambrose related, “Thank you very much on behalf of my village and on behalf of our sub-district, South Central. I know this is a plus for us, especially where education is concerned and I feel relief because of the challenges we face going to Sand Creek Secondary, so this is a great.”
