Kaieteur News – The European Union Election Observation Mission on Wednesday deployed 14 long-term observers across all 10 regions of the country to monitor the upcoming general and regional elections.
“Long-term observers are the backbone of our mission. Their work on the ground will provide essential information and insights, forming the basis of our impartial and fact-based assessment of the electoral process,” said Deputy Chief Observer Vania Anguelova.
In a statement the EU EOM said they follow a robust and well-established methodology of long-term, nationwide observation, ensuring a balanced and comprehensive analysis of the entire electoral process. Observers have been deployed in multinational teams of two and will closely follow key aspects of the election at the regional level. Each team will meet and engage with key electoral stakeholders across all 10 regions of Guyana, including voters, election officials, political parties, civil society representatives, and media. Their findings will complement the analysis of the EU EOM core team experts based in Georgetown.
Before deployment, the long-term observers received comprehensive briefings on the electoral process, the political environment, the legal framework, and the media and social context in Guyana. As election day approaches, the mission will be reinforced by 20 short-term observers. Together with the LTOs and other members of the mission, they will observe voting, counting, and the tabulation of results.
This mission was deployed at the invitation of the Government of Guyana. It is led by Chief Observer Robert Biedroń, who launched the mission at a press conference in Georgetown on 1 August 2025. The EU EOM will present its preliminary findings in a public statement two days after the election, followed by a final report, including recommendations for improving the electoral process, which will be published after the completion of the entire process.
The observers will monitor electoral preparations, the political climate, and campaigning activities, and will report their findings back to the core team in Georgetown. The EU has said that some 50 observers will be deployed across the country on election day. The mission is led by chief observer Robert Biedroń, a member of the European Parliament from Poland.
On September 1, an additional 20 short-term observers will be deployed to monitor voting and the tabulation process. “As international election observers, we care only about the integrity of the process, not about any particular party or candidate. Our mission is fully independent and impartial. All observers follow a strict code of conduct in line with the declaration of principles for international election observation. We aim to contribute to transparency, public confidence, and peaceful participation during this important electoral process,” Biedron told a news conference last Friday.
He said too, that two days after the election, the mission will release a preliminary statement. A comprehensive final report, including recommendations for future electoral reforms, will be compiled and published two months after the conclusion of the process.
The EU Election Observation Mission operates in full independence from the EU delegation in Guyana, EU member states, and other EU institutions.
