WIN calls for boycott of two city banks and their businesses
Kaieteur News – The We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party, led by sanctioned businessman Azruddin Mohamed on Friday called on citizens to boycott several city banks and other businesses.
WIN’s call for boycotting of the businesses come days after the two city banks closed the accounts of several candidates on the party’s list. The party said that the banks and other businesses are being used by the ruling People’s Progressive Party (PPP) government to destabilise and demoralize the two-month-old party.
In a statement to the media, WIN said, “One of the most dangerous casualties in our country today is the sense of solidarity. No matter how divided we may be by ideology, ethnicity or class, there are some things we must always hold sacred and must never compromise. These include freedom of expression, the right to dissent, the right to associate, and the right to contest elections. These are the foundations of any democracy. And today, We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) sounds the alarm that these rights are under siege in Guyana.”
According to the party, the PPP/C government has become “a vindictive, venomous political entity”, noting that “It no longer debates; it destroys. It no longer governs; it bullies. Any individual, group, or political movement that dares to question its excesses is subjected to an onslaught of state-sponsored intimidation, threats, and punitive measures. This is not governance. This is tyranny.”
WIN said that the second sign of tyranny, and the more insidious one, is when a government is able to mobilize its “corporate cronies” to act as enforcers of its political will.
The party disclosed that two commercial banks—Demerara Bank and the Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry (GBTI)—have taken the appalling step of cancelling the accounts of WIN candidates.
“This is not an accident. It is a clear, calculated, and cowardly attack against a legitimate political movement contesting elections in its own homeland. It is a politically orchestrated effort to destabilize and demoralize WIN and its supporters,” WIN argued.
Stating that its measures represent an assault on the Constitution of Guyana, WIN noted that these banks have become nothing more than “corporate footstools of the PPPC regime, dancing to the tune of a government that fears accountability and trembles at the rise of a new political force rooted in justice, equity, and nationhood.”
As a result, WIN calls on all Guyanese to resist what it deems to be “creeping authoritarianism” and as a first step boycott “Demerara Bank, Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry (GBTI), Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL) and all their goods and services, The Beharry Group and all its subsidiaries, goods, and services, KFC (and) Pizza Hut.”
WIN said the identified corporate actors must understand that they are not above the citizenry and they cannot ‘pick and choose’ persons’ political views and determine what is “safe” for businesses.
“They are either neutral or they are political operatives. And if they choose to operate as agents of repression, they must face the consequences of public outrage and resistance,” the party said.
The party made it clear that it will not be deterred by the threats.
“We will not be bullied. We will not be silenced. To the PPPC regime and their corporate enablers we say that your reign of fear ends now,” WIN added.
