Dear Editor,
Kaieteur News – The recent letter in the press by President Ramotar in which he states, “let us redouble our call to the U.S. to end its criminal blockade against the children and people of Cuba”, begs the question as to whether a procommunist / communist PPPC government in Guyana is good for regional security? The history of our country helps answer this question. It was the opinion of the U.S. and its allies that a communist PPP government, whether democratically elected or not, was a danger to regional security.
Thus, the prevention of Jagan from being able to take the Presidency and the delay in our nation’s Independence. These are facts that most Guyanese are aware of and President Ramotar who has been in Guyanese politics for quite some time should appreciate the sensitive nature of the position he continually pushes on behalf of the PPPC.
Mr. Kit Nascimento also reminded us of the swift action taken by the U.S. during the Presidency of President Burnham. He stated in his recent letter in the press that “Long ago, Forbes Burnham for different reasons, under very different circumstances, when I was a member of his Cabinet, poked his finger into the eyes of Uncle Sam and Mr. Henry Kissinger, then Secretary of State of the U.S. Government, made him and the people of Guyana pay the price by ensuring economic collapse of Mr. Burnham’s government, when all that Mr. Burnham had done was to seek to defy the imposition of American and Soviet imperialism as a non-aligned country. We learned a bitter lesson then and we should be much wiser now”.
This is good advice that President Ramotar and other leaders of the PPPC should follow. Consistently presenting an antagonist perspective towards the U.S. during a time of extremely high tensions between the U.S. and Russia does not help Guyana’ national security and economic development. Regional security for the U.S. will take precedence over other considerations as the war with Russia and Ukraine continues and the tensions with China continue to escalate. The last time the PPPC poked its finger in the eye of the U.S. when they insulted the U.S. Ambassador in 2014 led to a change in government.
The agenda being pushed by the PPPC government via President Ramotar in the current geopolitical environment can only lead to their downfall. The U.S. will not risk having an increase in the presence of communism that will reduce regional security and strengthen the influence of the communist countries (China, Russia and their allies) in the region.
The position being taken by President Ramotar and the PPPC as highlighted in his recent letter can easily lead to the economic downfall of Guyana. Are we willing to take this risk? Cuba had a very strong economy that the U.S. benefited from prior to the Cuban Revolution. The U.S. preferred to walk away from the economic benefits of Cuba after the revolution in preference for increased regional security. If the PPPC continues their procommunist rhetoric they will invite crippling economic sanctions from the U.S. and Guyana will face similar consequences as those being experienced in Cuba. The electorate must decide if this is a risk worth taking.
With utmost concern,
Mr. Jamil Changlee
