Kaieteur News – The U.S. is concerned about political contestant, Azruddin Mohamed, if he should get a seat in parliament. He could then be sitting in a committee and see materials that he shouldn’t. In view of the level of corruption, the crimes associated with more than a few ministers, it is surprising that the US is not concerned about those presences on parliamentary committees. Mohamed is capable of making representations for himself, and we make none for him, in keeping with our standard of not backing any candidate or group. But we at this paper have our own concerns about U.S. ‘concerns’ as such are convenient to the superpower. In more respects than one, the US can be seen in different lights, when examined under a fair microscope. Among those are inconsistency of posture, nobility of purpose, or hypocrisy in action. Moreover, the U.S. seems only to be concerned when its own concerns are in some sort of jeopardy.
The current climate and the current government in Guyana have helped enormously in the current dominant world power using this country as a playground for its games. Meanwhile, Guyanese are targeted and victimized by powerful arms of the State, while the U.S. sees it fit to be a picture of unconcern, and turns its face away from those local atrocities. It could be that the U.S. is not going there, because that would be interpreted as interfering in the domestic affairs of a sovereign nation. But there is concern about the candidacy of WIN’s Mohamed, and where that could lead, and how much that could be inconvenient, if not unacceptable. The constitutional rights of Guyanese are trampled upon at will, by a callous, often lawless, government, and when the Americans should be concerned, they take a sabbatical of silence. For a long time, Washington has been a champion of human rights, even going against powerful nations like Russia and China, yet it is unmoved and unconcerned about the stream of brutalities meted out against Guyanese.
Furthermore, Guyana’s massive oil patrimony, the property of all citizens, is monopolized and utilized for the benefit of less than one percent of the country population, and the US is neither seen nor heard. What does that say, how to view the U.S.? We absorb U.S. concern about WIN securing a seat in Guyana’s parliament, and what such a development signifies.
Azruddin Mohamed could be in parliament, and then see too much, hear too much, and know too much. We don’t disagree, except to say that what goes for him, must apply to all, especially with an eye on the incumbents. It is helpful to recall how many members of the government, and public servants, have been detained and interrogated at John F. Kennedy Airport. But, in some form or fashion, there was still business going on with them, they were still in parliament when it was prorogued. The point being made is that the U.S. should not be about half measures, for that leaves it looking as less than an honest presence in Guyana. A constructive one is also what could be called into question, for when sharply scrutinized, Guyana’s biggest ally also takes on the appearance of one that nibbles away at it, and weakens it, from the inside.
Looking away from Guyana, the U.S. have not had any qualms about dealing with the Philippines’s Marcos (the old one), nor the new one, either. Both are not the kind of company that honest people would invite to dinner, have around their families. Who could have coddled the older one more, looked the other way more? Then there is Gaza and the crimes being committed against the Palestinians. It would be inspiring for some frank U.S. U.S. concerns and hard-edged U.S. leadership to put an end to the bloodletting. Day after day, dozens (sometimes hundreds) of Palestinian men, women, and children are massacred, and the degree of deep concern that should be expressed by the U.S. rarely gets outside of conference rooms. The question for Guyanese, when such circumstances are considered, is what to make of the U.S. being concerned about Azruddin Mohamed, an elected MP sitting on some sensitive committee. Inconsistency, nobility of purpose, or hypocrisy?
