Kaieteur News – The Ministry of Education has received nine proposals from contractors interested in constructing the world bank funded annex of the St. Joseph’s High School in Georgetown.
According to the bids submitted to the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board (NPTAB), the bidders are BK International Inc., Khemraj Nauth Inc., Advance Engineering, Shandong High-Speed Dejian Group Limited, Qianjian Group Company Guyana Inc., Ilyas Legacy Firms, JD Investments Inc., Nabi Construction Inc., and Pacific Rim Contractors.
Kaieteur News understands that the ministry has been building a number of annexes at secondary schools to increase classrooms and amenities to enhance the learning environment for students and staff.
The education ministry in its initial tender document, stated that Guyana has received financing from the world bank towards the cost of the ‘Guyana Strengthening Human Capital through Education Project’ and intends to apply part of the proceeds towards the contract.
The government signed the US$44 million loan agreement with the world bank back in 2022 for the project which focuses on the expansion of access to quality education at the secondary level and improving technical and vocational training (TVET). The project supports the piloting and national rollout of a new curriculum for grades seven to nine and finance textbooks for grades seven to 11. It also caters for the development of a new TVET sector policy for 2022-2030 and improving the delivery of TVET at secondary and post-secondary institutions.
Some of the projects the ministry has undertaken and issued tenders for under the ‘Guyana Strengthening Human Capital through Education Project’ include the construction of two new blocks at the St. Stanislaus College valued at $665,298,205.
The ministry had also issued a tender stating that under the loan item-it would rehabilitate the Hope Secondary School located on the East Coast of Demerara, construct the new Christiansburg Multilateral School in Region 10, and build the Prospect Secondary School on the East Bank of Demerara. Construction of the US$8.1 million school is currently underway and when completed, it is anticipated that it will cater for 1,000 students.
