Kaieteur News – The Alliance for Change (AFC) has revealed a three-phase plan it intends to use to improve Guyana’s education system once it takes office. The plan is expected to run for 20 years, with five years for each phase.
Party leader, Nigel Hughes said the education system in Guyana is faced with major challenges, including low pass rates in key examinations and disparities based on geography, socio-economic status, ethnicity, and class.
The AFC, in order to address and mitigate these issues, has proposed a comprehensive education strategy, which aims to develop innovative thinking and adaptability among students, preparing them to thrive in a rapidly changing world influenced by technological advancements, climate change, and other unforeseen factors.
The plan outlines short-term (5 years), medium-term (10 years), and long-term (20 years) objectives to transform Guyana’s education landscape.
In the first five years in phase one, the party intends to create smarter class rooms which will introduce interactive, digital learning tools, create better exams which will enhance better learning by reducing unnecessary subjects, focusing on essential skills, create data-driven improvements with regular assessments to track and improve student success, create skills training institute for all regions that will train students in technical and vocational skills.
Students will also receive stipend and start-up tools on completion of the training. There is also promise of investment in teachers by increasing salaries, investing in school psychologists and social workers.
The second phase of the plan will see an AFC government doubling teachers’ salaries, ensuring all teachers are licensed and certified by the highest standards. It will also create a centre for ethnic studies at the University of Guyana to embrace diversity and overhaul the infrastructure by creating digital tools and e-learning for all schools.
In the last phase of the plan, the AFC said it will update the curriculum every few years to remain relevant with the changing world, create global competitiveness making sure students are ready for the world stage, and create a national policy for success which will make Guyana a leader in education and innovation.
“By implementing this comprehensive strategy, the AFC aims to transform Guyana’s education system into one that is equitable, innovative, and responsive to the needs of a rapidly changing world. This transformation is essential for building a modern Guyana that leads in education and development, ensuring a prosperous future for all its citizens,” Hughes said.
He said education is pivotal for national development, economic growth, social cohesion, poverty reduction and crime prevention. The AFC’s fundamental position is that education must be fit for purpose, addressing individual, collective, and societal developmental needs. Their vision encompasses creating learning communities where all activities contribute to the educational process, fostering skills development, technical and vocational education, health and cultural confidence.
The 3-phase plan is a part of a larger plan which the AFC will use to lift thousands of Guyanese out of poverty, address the high cost-of-living situation, ensure $250,000 becomes the minimum monthly income, ensure every Guyanese gets his or her fair share of the oil wealth, deliver essential services at a reasonable cost and build a modern, world-class economy grounded in transparency and innovation.
