Dear Editor,
Kaieteur News – The Guyana Defence Force has recently acquired a new aircraft at the cost of $711 m. Emblazoned on it is the national flag – the “Golden Arrowhead”, disgracefully but revealingly, improperly presented (GDF commissions $711 M aircraft, KN, July 11, 2025).
The constitution describes the golden arrowhead as symbolizing “Guyana’s mineral wealth and its forward thrust” and consequently presented as facing forward. The incorrect presentation of the national flag tells its own story, and it is of a government now awash in money but characterized by carelessness and a total disregard for standards.
The examples are all around us -shoddy construction (“Concussion Highway”, Crane 15 B Road and numerous others), poor contract execution (Gas-to-Energy Project, Bamia Primary School, 7.6 B office complex) even non-existent ones- the notorious Belle Vue Pump Station Contract!
It is downright disgraceful that this aircraft was commissioned with the national flag improperly displayed. If the government really believes what it says that we are ready to defend our sovereignty and similar platitudes, what they are doing is broadcasting to our envious neighbour that we are ill equipped.
This administration while promoting ‘Stink n Dutty’ Concerts, Vybz Kartel, Spice and the likes seem to care little about protecting and promoting national symbols and national pride.
In their campaign for the 2001 general elections, the PPP ran TV ads with an actor imitating Mr. Hoyte at the wheel of an old minibus but reversing. It declared, absent evidence that Mr. Hoyte’s intention was to take Guyana backward. The PPP now seem proud to broadcast to the nation with the arrow on the national flag facing backward on a $711 M aircraft that they are the ones who are taking Guyana backward.
Sincerely,
Ronald Bulkan

Government screws up all the time, everywhere, just like ordinary citizens.
Was the aircraft came with the flag installed, from Italy ?
Or was it the GDF that installed the flag ?
If so, it says a lot about their mentality and those in charge.
