Dear Editor,
In Guyanese political discourse, few habits are as deeply entrenched—or as destructive—as the perpetual cycle of nostalgia and recrimination. Political debates frequently degenerate into long lists of “what could have been,” “what should have been,” and historical score-settling over past administrations.
While history serves as an important guide, reminiscing about past eras without offering actionable, constructive solutions traps the nation in a dangerous status quo, actively hindering Guyana’s development. Looking backward usually serves a partisan purpose; in Guyana’s historically polarised environment, nostalgic identity politics weaponises the past, reigniting historical grievances rather than uniting the electorate around shared goals.
Guyana cannot build its future while staring continually into the rearview mirror.
