Alchohol consumption among causes for crime in Guyana – Blanhum

Kaieteur News – Crime Chief, Wendell Blanhum, said the excessive consumption of alcohol is among the major causes of criminal activities in Guyana.
Blanhum was at the time addressing crime trends and their causes during a Guyana Police Force (GPF) podcast called “Safeguarding Our Nation”.
Other occurrences include disorderly murders, property-related offences, drug trafficking particularly at border locations, domestic violence and cybercrime.
The crime chief said that most of these acts are committed by a small minority of Guyana’s population. While he did not share details on that minority, he pointed out, “That is why most of our attention is focused on key offenders and hotspots.”
Blanhum acknowledged that Guyanese still feel unsafe although statistics show that crime has plummeted.
“In reality even one violent crime is one too many” the crime chief said, adding, “We are working and we will not stop working until every Guyanese feel safe.”
He, however, listed three reasons why he believes that the decline in crime statistics is being overshadowed.
“Every crime, no matter how rare, has a real victim and those stories spread fast than statistics in a small society like Guyana…’
Another reason, according to Blanhum, is high-profile incidents.
“…For example, a shooting or a robbery stay in people’s mind and fuel fear. It overshadows the progress we have made,” the crime chief argued.
Blanhum said, “We as police must do more in showing the public what has been occurring behind the scenes.”
“…. For example, increase in visibility, community awareness and engagements and public awareness programmes aimed at urging persons to desist from spreading false or mis-information and to confirm with reliable police sources,” Blanhum explained.
He called on the public to work together with the Force to fight crime. Blahnum also outlined the force’s crime-fighting strategy which includes the three Cs. They are: crime prevention, community presence and collaboration.
