Six bid to review Guyana’s hospitality and tourism education

Kaieteur News – The Ministry of Education has received six bids from consultancy firms and overseas institutions to review the quality and relevance of Guyana’s hospitality and tourism education.

In June, Kaieteur News reported that the ministry issued a request for expressions of interest for the contract.

In response, six bidders from Canada, Jamaica and Guyana signalled their interest. At the recent opening of bids at the National Procurement and Tender Administration (NPTAB) office, it was disclosed that the following companies submitted bids: Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) (Canada), College of North Atlantic (CNA) (Canada), Mona School of Business & Management (Jamaica), Unique Helping Hands (Guyana), Fiscal Frontier Inc (Guyana), and Dunn, Pierre Barnett & Company Canada Limited (Canada).

The education ministry in its tender document said that the Government received financing from the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) towards the cost of the Hospitality and Tourism Training Institute Project and intends to apply a portion of the proceeds to eligible payments under the contract.

“The Ministry of Education is the Executing Agency of this Project and now wishes to procure consultancy services for Review of the Quality and Relevance of the Programming in the Area of Hospitality and Tourism Studies – Guyana,” the tender noted.

It was reported that the objective of the consultancy is to review the current state of hospitality and tourism education in Guyana, including existing curricula at the Carnegie School of Home Economics (CSHE) and the University of Guyana (UG), but not limited to public institutions.

“To review and incorporate the curriculum developed by the Caribbean Tourism Organisation (CTO), ensuring its relevance to the Guyanese context while maintaining alignment with regional and international standards,” the ministry said of the successful firm.

Further, the successful firm will be required to develop a curriculum framework that incorporates the latest trends in hospitality and tourism, including digitalisation, sustainability, utilisation of novel technologies, tools and equipment, methodologies, praxis and customer service excellence.

“To design and develop competency-based teaching and learning tools, including syllabi, training manuals, and instructional guides, ensuring they are accessible and compatible with a digital platform, (and) to integrate gender-responsive, socially inclusive, and culturally sensitive approaches to address the needs of marginalized and vulnerable populations, and to develop competency-based learning and assessment materials, including syllabi, training manuals, and instructional guides, “ the document detailed.

The consultant is expected to work for a period of four consecutive months.

Guyana’s first Hospitality and Tourism Training Institute is being constructed in Region Six.

In February 2024, the sod was turned for the construction of the US$7,002,126 Hospitality and Tourism Training Institute, a being funded by the CDB in collaboration with the Ministries of Education, Finance, and Tourism.

Kares Engineering Inc. and the architectural engineer, Deen and Partners, were awarded the contract.

Kaieteur News reported that the Hospitality and Tourism Training Institute, when completed, is geared at training personnel to ensure that they are equipped with the skills and knowledge that are necessary to staff and manage the growing tourism and hospitality sector in Guyana.

At the sod-turning ceremony, Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, Oneidge Walrond, said the institute is aimed at equipping students with hands-on training in a world-class facility that would enhance their knowledge of the sector, including modern approaches required to operate at international industry standards.

Importantly, the skills acquired will not only allow for access to direct tourism jobs but also indirect jobs and opportunities.

“As we build out the curriculum, it will distinguish itself as being particularly tailored to our Indigenous services and our Indigenous communities and focus on building out an eco-tourism product that is environmentally sound and friendly,” the minister said at the time.
