Kaieteur News – President Irfaan Ali has announced growing interest from regional medical professionals to work in Guyana as the government continues to expand and modernize the national healthcare system.
This announcement came on Friday evening during the commissioning of the new state-of-the-art Enmore Regional Hospital, valued at $6.6 billion, located on the East Coast of Demerara.
The Enmore Regional Hospital is the second such facility commissioned in the last five years and is a key component of a broader $37.2 billion national health infrastructure initiative. This modern facility is the first of six regional hospitals to be constructed through a partnership between the Government of Guyana and China’s Sinopharm International, with construction led by VIKAB Engineering and the China National Pharmaceutical Group Corporation. The agreement for the project was signed in 2022, and construction began in 2023.
Equipped to deliver international-standard care, the hospital features 75 inpatient beds in private, air-conditioned rooms (five beds per suite), two advanced operating theatres, a 24/7 emergency department, diagnostic services including CT scan, X-ray, ultrasound imaging, full-service laboratories, and dialysis machines. The facility also boasts its own oxygen plant and water treatment system. Patients will have access to a wide range of services, including gynecology, audiology, dentistry, ophthalmology, psychological support, and general medicine.
In his address, President Ali emphasized that Guyana’s healthcare sector is increasingly attracting talent from across the region, due in part to improvements in Guyana’s health care.
“We now have a situation in Guyana where regional graduates are seeking to come and work at our salaries. We are more and more becoming an attractive destination, not only for investments but for human capital as well,” he stated.
He added that the changes in salary and healthcare infrastructure are creating an enabling environment that encourages professionals to return or relocate to Guyana. “Today, salaries for healthcare workers are increasing. Nurses who had previously left our shores are now expressing interest in returning, and many have already done so.”
Currently, Guyanese doctors are heading various departments at the new hospital, and President Ali noted that even more medical professionals from across the region have expressed interest in joining Guyana’s growing healthcare workforce. “There is no country in the region that is investing in healthcare human capital like Guyana,” he declared.
Minister of Health Dr. Frank Anthony said that over 1,000 healthcare workers are currently employed at the Enmore facility. He noted that the hospital has not only improved healthcare delivery but has also created employment opportunities that are positively impacting families.
“More families will see an improved standard of income and an improved standard of living,” Dr. Anthony stated. He further announced that six new regional hospitals are slated to be opened by the end of August, underscoring the government’s commitment to expanding healthcare access nationwide.
