2025 CWI Rising Stars Regional U-19 Championships Round 1 Guyana vs. Barbados
Kaieteur Sports – A couple of classy knocks, one from Barbadian skipper, Joshua Dorne in particular, helped orchestrate a commanding 139-run win over the Guyanese yesterday when the first round bowled off at the Elquemedo Willett Park, Nevis.
The Bajans had a robust batting innings, posting a daunting 287-6 after 50 overs. Dorne led a string of scores as he hit 63 but not before burly opener Zachary Carter set the tone with his 62.
Wicket-keeper Gadson Bowens punched a 41-ball 43, while Shaquan Belle ended not out on 39, with Kevion Newton (33) helping to complete a good batting innings by Barbados.
Guyana’s bowling struggled a bit as five of their wicket-takers conceded between 40-60 runs each off their spells, with the exception of Romeo Deonarain (1-12).
Chasing almost 300 for a victory, Guyana were snuffed out for 148 in the 32nd over and only got there due to a spirited knock from all-rounder Shamar Apple who led with a run-a-ball 38 (2×4 2×6).
Afraz Ali Budhoo (23) and opener Deonarain (19) were the other main scorers amidst a dismal batting approach by the Guyanese.
Their chase started off a bit watchful, especially after losing their top-order in Rampersaud Ramnauth (3) Deonarain (19) and Romario Ramdheol (9) inside 12 overs.
Apple and Budhoo regained control of the ship, taking the score past the 100 – mark before the latter was out caught which left Guyana scrambling to regain control at 109-4.
When Apple lost his wicket after looking set, the wheels automatically fell off as Guyana lost a bundle of wickets in a hurry, thanks to Baptiste and company.
Dorne capped off an excellent game with figures of 2-27, while Xaundre Baptiste (2-22) and star with the ball, medium-pacer R’jai Gittens (4-26), maintained the necessary pressure required to keep their opponents at bay.
Guyana will look to rebound and rebuild come this Sunday, when they face the USA U-19 team from 10:00h at the St. Paul’s Sports Complex, St. Kitts. (Clifton Ross)
