Kaieteur News – The 38-year-old Stanleytown, West Bank Demerara (WBD) man who was wanted by police for rape turned himself in at the Diamond Police Station, East Bank Demerara (EBD) on Tuesday.
Quincy Bernard arrived at the station visibly injured, unable to walk and in company of his lawyer, Nigel Hughes and relatives.
Bernard was missing for almost 48 hours after ranks from the Wales Police Station arrived at his home Sunday night to arrest him.
Reports are that shots were fired at Bernard during the attempted arrest and he fled. Relatives were worried that he might have been nursing a gunshot wound. It is unclear where Bernard was before arriving at the police station but the police were asked to take him to the hospital first but ranks said that he had to be formally arrested before any other action could be taken.
The exchange was caught on camera.
Police in a statement subsequently noted that there were some abrasions to Bernard’s knees. Police said that Bernard told them he received the injures while running away from the police. He reportedly said he fell.
However, before police could have completed their formalities and take Bernard to the hospital for a doctor to determine his interviews, there was a confrontation among People’s Progressive Party/ Civic (PPP/C) activist, Ossie Rogers, Bernard’s relatives and Leader of the Assembly for Liberty and Prosperity (ALP), Simona Broomes.
Broomes reportedly accompanied Bernard and his relatives to the police station. While at the police station, Rogers reportedly walked in and confronted her with the words, “Y’all does only show up fuh the criminals. What about the victim?”
The confrontation was captured in a live Facebook video. Allegations were made that he also verbally abused Bernard’s female relatives. Police quickly calmed the situation down with some help from Broomes.
After completing the formalities, Bernard was taken to the Diamond Hospital where he collapsed and began frothing from the mouth.
He was placed in a stretcher and taken into an emergency room for treatment.
Police, in the statement released later on Tuesday, said that despite his weak state at the time, Bernard did not have any gunshot wounds to his body.
“There was no gunshot injury on his body,” police said.
Kaieteur News understands that Bernard might have collapsed because he had not eaten in days since fleeing the police.
He was reportedly hiding in a deserted area without access to food.
Kevin Paul, an acquaintance of Bernard, in a Facebook post said that police turned-up to arrest the accused around 18:00 hrs. on Sunday. Bernard was missing since then.
“Lance Corporal A****n, attached to the Wales Police Station, shot at Quincy Bernard around 6pm last night (Sunday Night). To date, no word on Quincy’s whereabout is known,” Paul posted while adding that his Bernard’s mother was worried as they continued searching for him.
Additionally, police in a wanted bulletin confirmed that a shot was fired when ranks attempted to arrest Bernard.
The Force said that at about 17:59hrs Sunday, ranks visited Stanleytown to arrest Bernard, resulting in a confrontation where it is alleged that a live round was discharged by a police rank causing Bernard to flee into hiding.
Police could not confirm if Bernard was wounded but stated that his whereabouts were unknown.
