Kaieteur News – A new roadway connecting Land of Canaan to the Linden-Soesdyke Highway will be constructed soon, as the design for the new road link has been completed, President Irfaan Ali announced.
President Ali made the disclosure during the opening ceremony for the new Ogle to Eccles Highway.
“We have now already completed the design of the connection from Land of Canaan to the new Soesdyke/ Linden Highway that will be alongside the new Silica city that opening up thousands of acres of land. Now that is going to be a spectacle of just like the new Demerara River Bridge,” he said.
He continued, “We are building basically, from an engineering perspective, you hear about floating foundation, we’ll be building actually a causeway. Now, those of you who travel and you go to Tampa in these areas, would know that in these swampy areas that the roads are constructed as a causeway.”
The President said a causeway will be constructed to avoid minimal impact on the environment.
“So, the design for the Land of Canaan to the Linden/Soesdyke is already completed,” he reiterated.
The Ministry of Housing and Water had announced that a new four-lane highway is being construction from Craig to Land of Canaan.
Meanwhile, the president disclosed that engineers are working on designs for an interconnection of the Houston Highway to the old East Bank Road.
“Now we also will have, very soon, the interconnection of the Houston Highway that is what we call the Houston interconnection that is on the design now.
That will be another four-lane road that will connect this (Ogle to Eccles) highway, Heroes Highway, Houston, and then goes out back again to the old East Bank Highway,” he explained.
President Ali thanked the Ministries of Public Works and Housing and Water for work done to connect the East Coast and East Bank corridors.
“Roads are not just about movement; they are catalysts for broad-based national development. Where roads go, opportunities follow, and where opportunity flourishes, so too does human dignity, industry and prosperity,” the president said.
Additionally, he said that by improving the road network, access to markets for farmers, fishermen, small businesses and investment opportunities are improving.
