Karaudarnau Village to get first secondary school – Education Minister

Kaieteur News – Minister of Education, Priya Manickchand on Wednesday announced that a decision has been made to construct a secondary school in the Amerindian village of Karaudarnau in Region Nine.
The minister made the announcement while revealing this year’s National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA) results on Wednesday at the Arthur Chung Conference Center.
Speaking on the investment being made in the hinterland regions to ensure students there have the same quality of education as those living along the coastland, the minister said a number of new secondary schools are being built.
“We are currently building in Regions 1, 7, 8 and 9, 22 secondary schools are building or built,” she noted.
With some of these schools nearing completion, she said that in Region Nine, there are eight new secondary schools.
“I just committed to building one at Karaudarnau that would host children from Bashaizrun and Achawib,” she noted.
The new schools, the minister noted, will help to eliminate the primary tops in these communities.
Meanwhile, speaking about the new school planned for his village, Karaudarnau’s Toshao, Apollos Isaacs told Kaieteur News that the construction of the secondary school is a huge step forward for the village and will benefit the secondary aged students greatly.
“It means they can get a quality education right here, close to home, without having to leave for extended periods,” he said.
With approximately 70 children attending secondary school from the village, he said they currently travel to the Aishalton Secondary School to acquire their education.
“We are incredibly grateful for this opportunity and excited for what it means for the future of our children and this school will also accommodate students from Parabara, Achawib and Bashaizrun, “he noted.
Approximately $36.2 billion of $175 billion is budgeted for the education sector this year is being used to build, reconstruct and improve education facilities across the country.
