Dear Editor,
Kaieteur News – The thread of similarity between T&T”s proposed reopening of its Petrotrin refinery and our then shuttered sugar estates were the economic benefits to be derived by families and communities and the coming alive of local economies, stagnated by the respective closures.
For these communities these re-opening is a beacon of hope. However, strong advocating voices of several business chambers across T&T, while in support and optimistic about the re-opening of the refinery, urged caution, prudence, and it must not be done hastily or for political gain (Daily Express June 24). Such factors as financial viability, funding (which it was felt should come from private sector or foreign investors) among several well-meaning, major concerns and observations.
Two shuttered industries, once the bedrock of their respective countries, one seeking to diversify into other crops while the other, its future hangs in the balance.
