Dear Editor,
Kaieteur News – Once again, the PPP/C has shown its complete disregard for democratic norms and decency. It has been brought to our attention that the PPP/C has shamelessly set up tents directly opposite the Good Hope, East Coast Demerara GECOM office, where they are actively coercing and manipulating electors who are engaged in the lawful Claims and Objections process. This is nothing short of political intimidation, designed to interfere with the independence of GECOM’s work and to create an atmosphere of fear and undue influence among ordinary citizens.
The PPP/C must immediately cease these actions. GECOM’s operations must remain free from political interference if we are to maintain even a shred of credibility in this electoral process. The PPP/C’s desperate attempts to control and direct voters reflect a party that is terrified of facing the people’s judgment at the ballot box. They know the electorate is fed up with the rampant corruption, the abuse of power, and the blatant disregard for accountability that has become the hallmark of their administration.
No political party should be allowed to camp outside of GECOM’s offices and harass citizens exercising their legal rights. This is not democracy, this is desperation. The people of Guyana deserve free, fair, and transparent elections, not a circus orchestrated by a government clutching at straws to cling to power.
We call on the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) to act firmly and decisively in the best interest of all Guyanese. GECOM has a constitutional responsibility to ensure that the electoral environment remains free, fair, and impartial. The Commission must not allow its work to be contaminated by the PPP/C’s desperate and reckless attempts to influence voters through proximity, intimidation, and pressure tactics.
We call on GECOM, the international community, and all right-thinking Guyanese to condemn this dangerous practice and demand that the PPP/C respect the sanctity of the electoral process. Guyana must not be reduced to a state where voters are pressured, monitored, and manipulated under the watchful eye of the ruling party. Democracy demands better.
Regards,
APNU
