Oct 06, 2026 Letters
Dear Editor,
In response to Mr. Kit Nascimento’s letter in Kaieteur News dated September 27, 2026, I want Mr. Nascimento to know that I am unlike him, who was a staunch critic of the PPP government for decades has now changed his position, and is hanging his mouth where the soup runs.
I also want Mr. Nascimento to know that I am a steadfast supporter of the party of my choice, and neither power, money nor position will cause me to change. In other words, I will not trade my integrity, morality and reputation for power, money or position in a corrupt and racist government.
A truly meaningful life requires standing up for a higher moral purpose, fairness, equality and truth which matters more than mere power, money or position. The late Dr. Martin Luther King once said, “if a man has not discovered something that he is prepared to die for, he is not fit to live.” For Mr. Nascimento to criticise my letter is healthy because it is his democratic right to do so, but what is unhealthy is that his criticism borders on denial and a lack of conscience. Is Mr. Nascimento so blind as to not see who are being awarded the lucrative multi-billion and multi-million-dollar government contracts? Is Mr. Nascimento so deaf that he is not aware that Afro-Guyanese who he claimed have power and position in the government from the Prime Minister to ministers to permanent secretaries and others do not have the authority to make any consequential decisions? Is Mr. Nascimento so uninformed that he does not know that those Afro-Guyanese are to what to do, how to act and the type of speeches to make. Simply put, they are powerless, their positions are ceremonial, and they are nothing more than figure heads. Furthermore, I cannot believe that Mr. Nascimento does not to know that this dictatorial and arrogant government is very vindictive, especially against the leader of the opposition elements. This includes members of both APNU and WIN.
While I respect the rights of Mr. Nascimento to criticise my letter, he did not provide any information or data to refute the issues addressed in my letter. It seems that Mr. Nascimento does
not know that constructive criticism and robust debate/discussions on public policy and officials and government is a fundamental right and a vital component of a healthy democracy. My critique of the inept, discriminatory and exclusionary policies of the current government is based on my perspective of the socio-economic realities faced by ordinary Guyanese. I cautioned Mr. Nascimento not to misinterpret my views on the government as unfair or biased but rather understand them as a genuine
engagement in the democratic process.
I want Mr. Nascimento to know that I stand by the points raised in my letter as they reflect my genuine concerns regarding the direction of our beloved country. While I observe his response, I firmly maintain the validity of the contents of my letter.
Sincerely,
Aubrey Retemyer
