Dear Editor,
Kaieteur News – It is commendable and needed to have a well-equipped hospital in each of the ten regions of the country.
Regions such as Region 4 will require multiple hospitals and the government is making progress towards making this happen. One thing that we must keep in mind is the continued importance of community health clinics.
These clinics allow for affordable, quick, and easy access to healthcare that is both corrective and preventative in nature. The cost is much less for the patient when compared to the hospitals and clinics are also able to meet a large percentage of the immediate health needs of the community. This being primarily due to the solutions they can provide for common health issues, the ease of its use for checkups and other preventative care needs. Utilization of healthcare resources also increase when community clinics are present.
Given the size of Guyana, the sprawl, and the high number of small villages across the country, using this low cost and very accessible option should be our first line of support for improved healthcare for our citizens. Taiwan which is ranked as a top global healthcare system has taken a similar approach that relies heavily on health clinics for primary care and uses hospitals for more complex and specialized care. This is an effective strategy for the next administration to keep in mind as we continue to develop the healthcare sector in Guyana.
Best regards,
Mr. Jamil Changlee
Chairman
