Dear Editor,
Kaieteur News – With the nearing completion of the new Demerara Harbour Bridge, it is time to consider an Essequibo River Bridge. The Essequibo River Bridge will provide access to additional resources for further economic development and provide substantial support for the agricultural ambitions of the country. An equitable land distribution plan must also be laid out ahead of time.
Once there is full connectivity across the counties, Guyana will truly be on its way towards prosperity. The Chinese have built the Grand Bridge which covers five times the width of such an undertaking and the cost was $8.7 Billion USD. If an Essequibo River Bridge is pursued the estimated cost should be approximately $1.7 Billion USD.
The decision of the ICJ will help dictate when such an investment should occur, but regardless of the timing over the next five years, the next administration should plan to have this undertaking as one of the top four infrastructural projects during its term. Those four major infrastructural projects during the next administration being as follows:
The required human resources for these projects will be significant and focus will be required to lay such a strong foundation for transformation. Reduction in the overall number of infrastructure projects, improved project management, and an all hands on deck approach will also be required for the successful execution of these top four infrastructure projects. It must be remembered that these are the key underlying fundamental elements that support the country’s development, and they must be implemented to support a strong and lasting development plan.
Once successfully implemented we would have opened up additional resources for economic development, enabled the elimination of flooding, enabled the elimination of power outages, ensured the availability of drinking water and improved our firefighting capabilities. Issues that have plagued our country since independence. Once these fundamental elements of societal development are in place other development pursuits including those that support business and economic growth will become easier to achieve.
Best regards,
Mr. Jamil Changlee
