Recent crossovers an end to bad decision-making era in PNC

Kaieteur News – Leader of the opposition, Aubrey Norton said the recent crossovers by former members of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) have marked the end of the bad decision-making era within the party.

While not denying that a few persons may vote against him, Norton assured that the structure of the PNC is intact. He said the crossover will not negatively impact the political unit.

“I don’t want to get into specifics, but I don’t believe any of them (the crossovers) can pull three votes. That’s the first thing I want to say. As it relates to the PM candidate, we haven’t decided as yet, but there are a number of people we are contemplating,” Norton said.

Earlier this year, former PNCR central executive member James Bond, publicly endorsed President Irfaan Ali for a second term. His announcement sent shockwaves across Guyana. More recently, PNCR executive member and chairman of Region Four, Daniel Seeram announced his support for President Ali after what he said were “fruitful discussions and careful considerations on matters of national and regional development” with Ali and Vice President, Bharrat Jagdeo. Immediately after Seeram’s announcement, his vice chairman, Samuel Sandy also threw his support behind the PPP government, declaring that he has consistently supported the work of President Ali and the PPP/C government. He said he stood resolute in his conviction that the government is in capable, visionary hands.

On Monday, PNCR member of parliament, Geeta Chandan-Edmon declared her support for the PPP/C government on the floor of the national assembly.

Norton was questioned on his reason for not writing the representative of the list requesting that Chandon-Edmond be replaced, and whether he regretted playing a major role in the Region Four Vice Chairman, getting the position instead of someone from the Alliance for Change (AFC).
Norton told reporters there is no place for regretting decisions in politics, since whatever decisions are made will also have repercussions.

“They will have consequences. You deal with the consequences. So, I don’t know that we regret any decision,” he stated.

Norton explained that when a political party is confronted by an issue, there has to be engagement with its leader before a decision is made. However, he felt that it was not a case where it was necessary to recall Chandon-Edmond.
“First of all, the PPP would have portrayed it in its own way. We were well aware of the direction, but we thought that it was not in the best interest of our party to go recalling her at the 10th hour, even though people are saying, if there’s another section, she shouldn’t be there, you wouldn’t look strong if you don’t remove her. But what I don’t know, what is the political capital, the political value to be had from moving her, if it was a situation where we had a one seat majority over our opponents, then it would have been useful, because she would not have been able to change a vote.”

Nevertheless, in the present circumstances where the one seat is on no real consequence in a vote, Norton said he does not believe there should be a fight to remove her.

“Like I said, we thank her and others for their service. They are free to go where they want to go. We will move on without being vindictive,” he said.
